The Seattle Reign announced a major trade on their Facebook page today, a deal that includes swapping USWNT stars. The Western New York Flash have agreed to send the rights to Abby Wambach plus midfielder Amber Brooks and a first round draft pick in the 2016 NWSL draft to the Seattle Reign in exchange for Sydney Leroux-Dwyer. New York also gets Amanda Frisbie in the deal.
More from Reign
Reign FC sent away a developing superstar for the rights to one of womens soccer’s most prolific goal scorers, although that could turn out to be a complete steal for the Flash given Abby Wambach’s announcement that she will be taking the entire season off from club football to focus on this summer’s 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Given that Seattle is much closer to her home and that she has expressed a desire to stay in the Pacific Northwest, the thought is that Abby Wambach may go back on her decision to not play club football this season.
For New York, this deal represents bringing in one of the best young talents in women’s soccer in Sydney Leroux-Dwyer (which is how she has been referred to following her marriage to Sporting Kansas City’s Dom Dwyer).
As everyone knows, Sydney Leroux is a top goalscorer who has had both a fantastic club and international career so far. I’m excited about the opportunity that she presents for us and the offensive threat that she adds to our attack.” –Western New York Flash Coach/GM Aaran Lines
Speaking on the acquisition of Amber Brooks, Reign FC Head Coach/General Manager Laura Harvey was pleased.
We have followed Amber closely through her time in the Bundesliga and the NWSL. She will add needed depth to our midfield this season and we expect her to be a valuable contributor for many seasons to come.” Seattle Reign FC GM Laura Harvey
Regarding the acquisition of Abby Wambach’s contract rights, Harvey went on to say:
“Abby is a fantastic player who has proven over the years she is one of the best forwards in the world. We understand and support her decision to focus on the World Cup this season. The contribution she is capable of making is obvious, so we will welcome her to our club at whatever point she is ready to rejoin the league.”
For both clubs this is a risky trade, but given that the Flash have a stockpile of first round picks and that Abby Wambach has initially said she won’t play this season and that Sydney Leroux is a very marketable and talented player, I’m tipping New York to be the winners of this trade.
The NWSL season kicks off Friday April 10th with the Houston Dash taking on the Washington Spirit, meanwhile the Seattle Reign will host their trade parters from Western New York on Sunday April 12th. It should be an interesting start the season following this trade!
