Clint Dempsey – AKA Mr Clutch

Clint Dempsey is integral to the Seattle Sounders success, just look at the results in the games played without the USMNT star.

Having struggled with a hamstring issue for most of the build up to the end of the MLS regular season and Decision Day, the Sounders main man has hit form just at the right time for the Sounders – would anybody have expected any different?

Dempsey has always been a player that has delivered in the clutch, be that in the English Premier League, European competition, the US National side or even the Sounders. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody that Dempsey is producing again now.

Dempsey followed his brace against Real Salt Lake on Decision Day with another goal in the playoff tie against LA Galaxy. Deuce pounced on a lose ball to get the Sounders off to a great start that boosted belief they could get though.

Just days later Dempsey stepped up again. He produced an unbelievable free kick just minutes from the end of the Conference Semifinal against FC Dallas. The result is that the Sounders have a 2-1 lead to protect heading into the second leg on Sunday.

Had Dempsey not produced that clutch moment of magic the Sounders playoff lives would be looking doubtful. They would have been traveling to Toyota Stadium, to play the team with the best MLS Home Record, needing a win or a high scoring draw.

The Sounders still have a number of injury concerns heading into the game, most notably Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Evans. However, for the first time in a long time they can excitedly say that Dempsey is 100% fit and bang in form.

If the Sounders are to get past FC Dallas and reach the Conference Finals, the chances are very high that Mr Dempsey will need to step up and deliver again. The Sounders certainly are no one man team, but at present he is undoubtedly their MVP.
