Leagues Cup 2024 groups announced - Seattle Sounders is in the group West 6

Seattle Sounders will face Minnesota United FC and Club Necaxa of Liga MX.

Leagues Cup 2024 is a tournament that features MLS and Liga MX clubs competing for a trophy and three spots in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. The competition runs from July 26 to August 25 and will have a Group Stage followed by a knockout phase. The schedule for the Group Stage games and more details about the tournament format will be revealed in the future.

If you are a fan of the Seattle Sounders, you might be wondering how they will fare in the 2024 Leagues Cup. The Sounders have been drawn into Group 6 on the West, along with Minnesota United and Club Necaxa. Here is a preview of what to expect from each opponent and how the Sounders can advance to the knockout stage.

Minnesota United

The Loons are no strangers to the Sounders, having faced them twice in the 2023 MLS season. The Sounders have a huge advantage in the history between the two clubs. Seattle had 10 wins and two draws, against only one loss. Minnesota United finished 11th in the West last year, missing out on the playoffs by three points.

They have a balanced squad, led by argentinian midfielder Emanuel Reynoso, who scored six goals and five assists in 2023. They also have a prolific striker in Teemu Pukki, who can cause problems for any defense.

Club Necaxa

Necaxa is currently in the 23/24 season. The Apertura happened in the second half of 2023, while the Clasura is happening in the first half of 2024. In the Apertura, They finished in the last place of the table with only three wins and six draws in 17 games. In the current Clausura, the team still didn't lose a game, with two wins and three draws. They have a young and inexperienced roster, with only a few players who have international caps.

How to advance

In the Group Stage, each team has two games and the ones with the most points in each group move on to the Knockout Stage Round of 32. There are no ties in the Leagues Cup Group Stage. If the score is even after 90 minutes, the teams have to take penalty kicks. The Seattle Sounders will play both games in their stadium because they were the best ranked team on this group.
