The 2023 season was a challenging one for coach Brian Schmetzer and his team. Some of his key players suffered from injuries, international duties, and loss of form, and he had to cope with that. It took him a long time to find the optimal lineup that could deliver consistent results. He had to make some tough calls, such as benching star players like Nicolas Lodeiro and Raul Ruidiaz, who had been instrumental in the previous seasons. He also had to rotate other veterans like Fredy Montero and Héber. Schmetzer finally settled on a balanced and dynamic XI that propelled the team to a strong finish in the MLS regular season.
Although a lot of fans argued that Schmetzer had one of the most talented (and expensive) bench players of the league, it became clear that the coach didn't trust most of those players to change the direction or result of the games. That was the first sign that something was going to change in the offseason.
