The Seattle Sounders kept up their high level of play over the weekend as they knocked off Sporting KC in a commanding 3-0 victory on Saturday. Will Bruin, Jordan Morris, and Cristian Roldan scored the goals for Seattle.
The Sounders have now picked up 10 points in their last four matches with the only non-win being a 1-1 draw with Supporter's Shield leaders LAFC last weekend. Dating back to the middle of May, Seattle has picked up 16 points in their last seven matches. The Sounders have a 5-1-1 record in those seven matches. This Seattle team is red-hot, which is not something the rest of MLS can be happy about.
It was a rough stretch in MLS play for Seattle before these last seven matches with the Sounders attention on winning the CONCACAF Champions League (which they did). Seattle lost three straight MLS matches from April 16th-May 7th. They also fell on penalty kicks to San Jose in the round of 32 in the US Open Cup on May 11th.
In the match against Kansas City on Saturday, it was all Seattle. KC had the edge in possession, but Seattle was more threatening. The Sounders put eight shots on goal to just one from SKC. Seattle also completed 83.8% of their passes in the match.
Bruin got things started early in the eighth minute as he put home an assist from Cristian Roldan. Roldan put a nice cross into the box, and then Bruin headed the ball back across the net to beat the keeper. The goal is Bruin's second of the season.
Seattle's second goal also came on a header coming off a cross into the box. This time it was Jordan Morris who put the ball home in the 71st minute. Nouhou put a nice ball in, and then Morris beat his defender in the air for the ball to put it in a near perfect spot in the net to score. Morris now has four goals on the season.
Cristian Roldan scored the dagger third goal in the 76th minute as he put home an assist from Morris. Leo Chu put a ball forward to Morris which beat a couple of defenders. Morris drove at the Sporting KC keeper which drew him off his line. Morris then played the ball across the net to a wide-open Roldan who put it home. It was Roldan's third goal of the season.
Cristian Roldan was fantastic on Saturday. He picked up the one goal and one assist, but also played well other than those plays. He completed 83.3% of his passes, made three key passes, and won 13 duels at a 41.7% success rate. Roldan also made two successful tackles.
Morris also had a strong showing. He had the goal and the assist, but he also completed 78.8% of his passes and picked up three key passes.
Nouhou also played well as he completed 97% of his passes and added two key passes. Nicolas Lodeiro was also strong in the midfield with a 85.4% passing completion percentage.
Seattle had a commanding edge in Expected Goals as well. Seattle had the advantage in XG's at a 2.8-0.5 clip according to MLS's official stats. They out-passed Kansas City as well, 83.9%-81%.
This was a great performance from Seattle, which gives Seattle sole possession of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sounders are now sitting on 23 points through 15 matches which has them seventh in the West. They are just one point out of sixth, and just three points out of fourth. Seattle currently has a two point edge on Houston and Vancouver who are on the outside looking in. This hot-streak from the Sounders has catapulted them up the table, and they're now above the playoff line.
With the talent and pedigree that Seattle has, if they keep playing at this level...then watch out.
