Two of the most successful teams in Major League Soccer are the Seattle Sounders and the Philadelphia Union, but they have not played against each other very often. Their first encounter was in 2010, when the Sounders hosted the Union in their first match as a new team. They have met only 11 times in the regular season since then. The Union have won five times, the Sounders four times, and they have drawn three times.
The Sounders are more successful in terms of trophies, as they have two MLS Cups, one Supporters' Shield, and four US Open Cups to their name. The Union has only one Supporters' Shield, which they won in 2020, and has failed to win the US Open Cup despite reaching the final four times.
One of the most painful defeats for the Union was in 2014, when they hosted the Sounders at PPL Park. Union scored first, at the 38th minute with Maurice Edu. Chad Barrett equalized for Seattle in the beginning of the second half. The game went to extra time, and the Sounders scored twice more with Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins to win 3-1 and lift their fourth US Open Cup trophy.
The Union has been more dominant over the Sounders lately, particularly at their home ground. In their last three matches against the Sounders at Subaru Park since 2015, the Union have secured two victories and one tie, and have not conceded any goals.
The last meeting between them was in 2019, when they played to a 0-0 draw. The Sounders have failed to score a goal at the Union's stadium in MLS matches since 2013, when Eddie Johnson and Mauro Rosales netted for Seattle in a 2-2 tie.
The Seattle Sounders is visiting the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park on March 9th, Saturday, at 4:30 p.m. (PT). As you may know at this point, MLS games usually start nine minutes after the announced time. You can stream the game on Apple TV MLS Season Pass. Unlike the first game of the season, this game is not free to watch.
