After 13 seasons in the league, Will Bruin has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional soccer. Bruin played for the Seattle Sounders for six years, where he earned the admiration of the fans and helped the club achieve many victories.
After spending six seasons with the Houston Dynamo, where he netted 57 goals and 22 assists in 199 games, Bruin joined the Sounders in December 2016. He came off the bench in a 2-1 defeat to his former team, the Houston Dynamo, on March 4, 2017, for his Sounders debut. He scored 11 goals and three assists in 31 MLS regular-season games in his first season with the Sounders, helping them advance to MLS Cup for the second year in a row.
Bruin remained a dependable and adaptable forward for the Sounders in the subsequent seasons, taking on different roles as a solo striker, a partner striker, or a late-game substitute. He also demonstrated his leadership and professionalism on and off the pitch, guiding younger players and contributing to various community projects.
Bruin faced many challenges in his career with the Sounders. In 2019, he tore his ACL and missed almost a year of playing. He worked hard to overcome his injury and came back to the field in August 2020. He also had to accept less playing time after the arrival of star striker Raúl Ruidíaz in 2018. Bruin never let these hardships affect his attitude or performance, and he always gave his all for the team when he got the chance. He also contributed to the team's first Concacaf Champions League title in 2022. He scored his final goal for Seattle on September 17, 2022, in a 2-1 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Bruin joined Austin FC as a free agent on February 10, 2023. He netted three goals in 23 games for Austin. He retired with 93 goals and 38 assists in 377 games. He also played twice for the United States national team and was part of the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup-winning squad, though he did not feature in any game in that tournament.
Will Bruin, one of the most cherished players in Sounders history, will never be forgotten. The "Bear" dedicated himself to the club and the fans, and he remains a member of the Sounders family. We are grateful for his amazing career with the Sounders and hope he succeeds in his next ventures.
