Seattle Sounders are looking into signing Paul Arriola but is that a good idea?

It's time to go fishing for USMNT bench players from FC Dallas I guess.

Within 2 days the Sounders have been linked to 2 different USMNT players who underperformed last year who play for FC Dallas. It's a strategy I suppose. A actual difference between the 2 is that Ferreira is on the younger side at 23 while Arriola is almost 30 at 29. Which already is a bit of downside with many of our best players already being 30 or above. But is that it or is this a really great short term solution to our woes in the final 3rd?

Last year creating and finishing chances were a problem for the Sounders so much so that the 1st priority is to solve those attacking by raiding FC Dallas's attack for some reason. To call Arriola a prominent player is a bit of understatement, he's the captain of FC Dallas and he knows the MLS like the back of his hand. Having played previously for DC United and only left the MLS once for Swansea City in 20/21. Like Ferreira he had a bad season in 2024 having 5 goals and 2 assists but unlike Ferreira he also had a bad 2023 only having 3 goals and 4 assists to the same number of goal contributions. Which is really down when you compare it to his 2021 and 2018 where in 21 he had 15 total goal contributions (10 goals, 5 assists) and 13 total goal contributions (7 goals and 6 assists) though his impact has always been more indirect averaging a key pass each season he's been in the MLS including the past 2 seasons. And has always had strong through balls.

This already puts 2 logical train of though for how you could look at this transfer before it even happens. 1 is that due to the declining quality in FC Dallas over the years. He hasn't been able to recreate his same impact but on a better team he would be able to. Or that he's past his prime already and unless he's willing to accept a lesser/specialized role he'll do more hurt than good. His injury history isn't as worrying as Ferreira's. But his recent exclusions from the USMNT shows that dip in form isn't mere speculation but something a lot of people have observed.

Based on this it looks like he's only coming to the Sounders because FC Dallas over a disappointing is looking to clean house and rebuild. But still want more if they want to part with Ferreira as he clearly isn't the impact player compared to the two. But this could still work out if either A) we buy other younger players who can impact on the offense on a more consistent basis or De La Vega turns it around and he can be a impact player off the bench. B) He's limited to not the right wing but a right midfield role where he is meant to create chances and facilitate to the more creative player makers since he isn't a dribbler.
