Sounders looking to buy Jesus Ferreira, good move or nah?
From a squad perspective it makes perfect sense last season one of the only reasons we didn't win the MLS Cup was the lack of a clinical finisher due to the constant injuries to all-time scorer Peruvian Raul Ruidiaz and Jordan Morris due to age plus ig tnjuries couldn't step back into that role. So on paper it makes perfect sense. Ferreira is young only 23 and is a striker who has proven himself at a MLS level. Having multiple seasons in the MLS with 210+ goals. But games aren't won or lost on paper so if we look a bit closer would we see flaws?
Yes he's had seasons with 10+ goals with 12 goals in 2023 and even 18 in 2024 plus a excellent record for the USMNT 17 goals in 24 appearances. But there's some cracks in the armor there or rather in his bones. He struggled last season but so did all of FC Dallas and that could also be attributed to leg strain he suffered ironically enough against the Sounders. Because of that he missed 9 games and that's the 3rd time in his young career he missed 9+ games. Last season he suffered 4 different injuries and missed 11 games, a career high. That being said that does make his 12 goal tally that year more impressive with a lot of pain and missed time but 1 man can only endure so much. It's really easy to dismiss his off year as the whole team was off and to think a new environment is what he needs to get back on his feet. And that could be the case. But we should also consider than even at 23 that the 7 injuries he's accumulated over the years might've caught him. Now that's something we won't know until he's played enough games obviously. But it's a fair thing to be worried about if we're speculating on how good or bad a signing will be.
If he does still have some juice in him after all those injuries and last year was a off season. Then when it comes to getting goals I have no doubts he'll get em for the green, blue and white. He's amazing at set pieces easily being 1 of the best free kick takers and penalty takes in the league. Plus a strong finisher and counter attacker with amazing on and off ball footwork. Plus he's a great passer especially with long passes which is rare for a striker. Having 3 assists last season, 4 before that and then 6 assists before that. Plus he's one of the only strikers in the MLS that presses almost or as often as Morris which if we could get more turnovers in our 3rd would of course help our scoring troubles. And certainly would help us with controlling games better too.
There's also the matter of price tag, his salary with the FC Dallas is 2,000,000 dollars and according to transfermarkt is worth 6,000,000 million pounds. And while his value might've lowered and I doubt he'll beat the record La Vega set. But I doubt he'll be cheap and that makes him more of a risk and puts more expectations on him to preform. But he fits what the Sounders want and need so unless he really is too banged up, he should be a risk worth taking. Thanks a bunch for reading!
