For the 16th time in a row, the Sounders have invaded Utah, only to return without a win. As usual, the Sounders had the better team, better chances, and more chances, but were unable to outscore Real Salt Lake and came away with their first loss of the season. The Red Sox had their curse of the Bambino, the Cubs had their curse of the goat, and the Lakers were cursed with the existence of the Celtics. These curses have all come to an end, but the Sounders have yet to find a way to snap their poor outcomes in Utah.
The Sounders have yet to figure out how to win in Utah
Mistakes were made, there were some tight calls, and a goal was called back. In addition, Jordan Morris is expected to be out for at least 4 weeks, but the rest of the team seems healthy so far. It is only 1 loss, and there are sure to be others, so what does this mean for the Sounders?
Besides needing to figure out how to beat those guys, they need to play poorly at times so they figure out how to quickly get into midseason form. It also takes a little of the shine off the season, as all the irrational designs for an undefeated season can be put off until next year.
Now fans can get back into the grittiness of the MLS season, the cups out there for the taking, and the pleasure of uncertainty that comes from not knowing what is going to happen during those intense minutes of a tight game in its final minutes.
With the talent the Sounders are wielding this season, they will be in the thick of those moments, drawing in spectators in search of those moments that can be either devastating or propel them into a frantic state of jubilation. As a fan, we can just hope that we catch more breaks during those moments than the Sounders have provided in Utah.
