Obed Vargas before he's even hit drinking age has captured the heart and soul of many Sounders fans and for great reasons as well. His decision making and creativity which is so advanced for his age making him such a joy to watch plus a key contributor to the Sounders already. But Sounders fans aren't the only people who've noticed his greatness. As the most historic club in Mexico Chivas Guadalajara is looking into stealing the young gem from the Emerald City. And that leaves open the question, should we accept the offer if 1 comes?
As fellow Fansided blog MLS Multiplex reported earlier today Chivas are looking into Obed Vargas. The 1st thing to discuss is if Obed himself would be into a move like this and the answer is absolutely. Despite starting out in the USMNT youth ranks in 2024 Vargas switched to the Mexican national team making his 1st cap against the USA ironically enough. He even became the 1st Alaskan to represent any senior national team in men's soccer. And in the most Alaskan fashion possible, that was for a team that wasn't the US. If he wants to further that connection going to Chivas would be a very smart move. There's been 9 Chivas players that have had recent call-ups to the Mexican National team as compared to 2 MLS players with recent Mexican call-ups, including Vargas. Most Mexican team players play in Mexico so it makes perfect sense if he wants to earn more call-ups to Mexico team. So while Obed Vargas has his own reasons do the Sounders have reason to accept such a offer right now?
For some the idea of selling Obed right now is ridiculous and such thoughts should be banned but with the amount of talent he has of course there was always going to be other teams interested in his talents. And especially we resigned Joao Paulo we do have a log jam at CDM. We also drafted Ryan Baer this past MLS Superdraft as well as already having the likes of Danny Leyva, Josh Atencio who can play there so can Cristian Roldan, Reed Baker-Whiting, as well as Paul Rothrock plus Kim Kee-hee who rumored to bring back can also play CDM. But can any of those players do a better job than Obed Vargas? That's gonna be a hard no from me. It's 1 of the reasons he's valued so much which is the quality ball he plays for someone so young. Many of the players I listed are young as well and have room to grow or our veterans who play a different position but can do a job at CDM as well but the fellow youngings ain't as good as Vargas and the veterans are better at sticking to their own positions rather than switching. But if we get enough money for Alaskan then we can replace him, yeah? Technically true but that leads me to a different point.
It's extremely difficult for most if not all clubs to know when to sell a extremly talented young player. It's not a exact science and there's many factors that can change in the blink of a eye that can increase or decrease the value of a player. So it might be tempting to sell up at the 1st major offer and get the goodbyes over with. But I'd be very afraid that 1 or 2 years Chivas would sell the talented American-Mexican to PSV or Benfica for 20 mil and we'll be going, damn that should've been us. And really that's why we should hold on. If at 19 he's already attracting attention from 1 of Mexico's biggest ever clubs then 1 or 2 more years I'm sure Ajax or Girona would very interested in his services and pay the Sounders a lot for his talents. Thanks a bunch for reading!
