Patrick Ianni’s Injury Creates A Battle In Sounders Defensive Depthchart

I’m a few days late to the party on this one. Not because I didn’t know about it, but sometimes I just don’t always know how to appropriately respond to this type of news. My immediate reaction is to laugh, which, not knowing me, sounds particularly odd and kind of mean spirited. If you knew me that’s actually probably how you might take it too. But here is the thing, it’s kind of like reenforcing good ol’ Murphy and his stupid Law. The idea that “Anything that can go wrong, can and usually will”.

The big news coming that Patrick Ianni, Sounders starting centre-back, being promoted from “3rd string duties”–in lieu of trading top defender Jeff Parke. Could miss the first game of the season and even upwards of four-to-six weeks with a fractured foot, according to the Seattle Times.

Sigi Schmid has been coaching for something like a umpteen-million years and hadn’t heard of anything like this happening before–let a lone seen anything like this. So you know, it’s just all together a weird and now precarious situation that the Sounders find themselves in.

Considering the situation with the Sounders back line and the general potato chip-thin depth that we have behind Jhon Kennedy-Hurtado and Ianni, it’s been rather surprising at the apparent lack of attempts to gather more experienced depth. There was talk about Christoph Metzelder joining the club, and that could still happen, but that’s apparently not going to happen until at the very soonest this summer and likely not at all.

Zach Scott and Andrew Duran are obviously in tow for the third centre-back job kind of by attrition and you could possible throw in first round pick Eriq Zaveleta into that mix as well. So it’s not as if there aren’t options. According to various articles and interviews my favourite named trailist, Anshani Fairclough, seems in the mix for a spot on the club and could move his way into the conversation and of course according to Joshua Mayers there is a late coming trailist in Mason Trafford who is joining the club this week for stage two of the Sounders pre-season.

Who knows what the season holds? Maybe Ianni’s injury isn’t what it seems. Maybe it heals quickly. I don’t know maybe this is a lot of words wasted on a subject already hammered to death by others. But heading into some very crucial games within the very first month, it’s imperative to have a backline in place and in synch with one another. Maybe there isn’t a need to go out and make a move just yet. But things certainly looking a little scattered and even the most confident Sounder supporter has to be a bit unsettled.

One things for certain, this thing is going to be a battle. Anyone care to set the betting line on this one?
