If we learned one thing this past week, and really I hope you learned more than just that, it’s that the Sounder have a bit of depth. Not just the kind that can step in if someone gets hurt or when there is a need. The likes of Mario Martinez, Zakuani, Estrada and Sammy Ochoa could potentially be starting for any team in the MLS. Oh and then there are the Alex Caskey and Andy Rose guys too.
It’s quite inspiring when you think about teams such as Chivas USA and New England who have struggled quite a bit in recent years to find talent to compete season after season. Sure, they have some decent players; one or two good young players who could potentially could turn a corner and change the complexion of the franchise going forward. But that’s them.
The Sounders dont’ have to bank on a couple of youngsters working out. Sure, they had to kind of cross their fingers with EJ not to mention David Estrada pleasantly and surprisingly turned a corner. But credit due where it’s deserved. This front office continues to do it’s home work and the coaching staff works over time to get these guys all on the same page.
When you consider that there are still question marks on what happens to EJ after this season, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stick around, and the countless rumors that consistently have Fredy Montero heading over seas. This team is poised for a positive in the future not just this year.
When you consider teams such as LA, RSL in the western conference and looking at the state of their rosters. This is a team that is going to consistently fight not just for a playoff spot but for a shot at the Supporters Shield. I’m sure this all gets said a lot. But when you have teams in the league that are consistently put together poorly and have terrible management you take nothing for granite. It’s not a revelation. But it’s like curling up with a very comfortable blanket. It just feels good to mention it from time to time.
