Sigi Schmid And Reading Between The Lines

Sigi Schmid talked with reporters today. That isn’t very surprising. I think that happens most days. But on a relitively slow news day, there are always little nuggets that one can possibly hope to ascertain or even generally assume he meant without further clarification. This is generally a journalistic “no-no” but I’m not a journalist. I’m a blogger… who lives in his mothers basement. And I need more chips…

Anyways, you can find the conversation written out by Joshua Mayers on the Seattle Times site, always the highest standard–I’m looking at you Geoff Baker.

  • Sigi says Mason Trafford has been fitting in well and has been used both as a Centreback AND as an outside back. This isn’t generally surprising as he played as a left side fullback with IFK Mariehamn.
  • Don’t shed tears for Cordell Cato, it seems he won’t return and that’s kind of on him.
  • We won’t see Andrew Duran against Portland, though expect to see Steve Zakuani and possibly Babayele Sodade. There may also be some names you don’t recognize out there as well as they get finale looks at players before the Tucson series starts.
  • Fitness is “equal or ahead” of where it was last year. I suppose that’s important but it doesn’t make me feel any better about Champions League.
  • Eriq Zavaleta is going to play up top in the scrimmage tomorrow for the first time, it’s supposedly just for a quick look and a change of pace. This kind of pists me off, in a way that it probably shouldn’t.
  • Both, the vets that are in camp, as well as a few of the younger guys, will have opportunities with Patrick Ianni out.
  • Sounders are going to give Will Bates plenty of time to heal up.
  • Adam Johansson won’t join the team until after Feb 6th, as he’s sticking around with the Swedish national team.
  • Reading between the lines here, Sigi lets on that both Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson are likely to head to Honduras to take on teammate Mario Martinez in the US World Cup qualifier.
  • I thought it was funny the continual mentions of the US team looking over worked and tired. Likely coming from “very strenuous three-week training camp”.
  • It looks like both Sammy Ochoa and David Estrada are competing for the open forward spot with the exit of Fredy Montero.
  • Supposedly Mauro Rosales and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado are both in better shape now than last year when they came in… this means nothing to me and basically equates to spring training “best shape of their life” comments.
  • There isn’t really a decision about Rosales being the Captain of the team again. Sigi mentions Evans (obviously), Michael Gspurning and Ozzie Alonso. Ozzie being Captain would be bad ass. I’m just sayin’, who else would like to see him drop Salazar in the middle of a match? About half of MLS, that’s who.
  • Seattle Times call got all “gargled” for a moment but Andy Rose as well as Estrada are mentioned as young guys stepping up. I’m not sure if this is in reference to leadership or turning a corner talent wise…whatever, their both going to play pivotal roles this year and I think we all already knew that.
  • A lot of pressure is placed on Brek Shea, Kei Kamara and Andy Najar on how MLS is viewed around the world.
  • There was a Supersonic reference, +10 points Sigi Schmid.
  • It’s an obvious thought, but, Sigi mentions that MLS is much further along now than 6 years ago when David Beckham came into the league and feels as though the league will do just fine without him. I agree.
