Tonight, isn’t about 3 points or.. a win–if you will–there isn’t really a table here and not really a way to distribute points. But, I know that everyone has their eyes on a win and that is pretty crucial ‘n all. But at this point it’s not about if we win or about if we can get 3 goals. What matters is keeping Santos Laguna off the board.
A clean sheet will go a long way to separating the goal deferential between the two clubs headed back to Mexico next week. It would give the Sounders an air of confidence that they could stop and defend against the Albiverdes potent attack. Even if they are going to have to do it in a hostile environment such as Estadio Corona.
If you looked at all at the line-ups projected for this evening you’ll notice a lot of familiar names, if not all, because Club Santos Laguna is thought to play the exact same XI that embarrassed the Sounders one year ago. Their side hasn’t seen much turnover, but ours has. We’re not the same club and despite the short comings of late, I believe we’re better.
A healthy game changer in Zakuani, a resurgent international in EJ, and a world class striker in Martins not to mention a defensive line, that despite missing it’s first string ‘keeper, is potentially better than what it was last year.
Enough has been written about the mental lapses by Hurtado, Ianni is turning a corner and with Zavaleta seemingly pushing for minutes, JKH is going to have to step up to keep his job. We’ve seen good and bad performances early this season from him. He’s going to have to be present and he’s going to be locked in for a full 90. No missing assignments, no allowing loose balls in the 18 yard box, and certainly no more poor challenges that expose the back line to easy counter attacks.
Sounders need more than just goals. They need a mental win that tells them when they go down to Mexico they have a shot.
