Seattle Sounders FC QotD: Can We Penetrate The San Jose Earthquakes Net?

Good Morning Sounders, with match day tomorrow and the likelihood that I will be preoccupied with my side project and doing our weekly podcast, we’ll do our match predictions today rather than tomorrow. Obviously it’s pretty easy to look at San Jose and kind of lick your chops. Their not the same team they were last year and but even then they are returning their two bash brothers from the penalty box and seeing the return of their young left back in Justin Morrow.

Steve Lenhart and Alan Gordon both will be available for this weekends match which will create frustration a long that back line. It’s well documented how tenacious and down right rough they play. That said it has translated to goals, not just for them, but also for Chris Wondolowski and now 22-year old Adam Jahn, who has been perpetuating their slogan “Goonies never say die”.

The problem hasn’t necessarily been with the two trouble makers or the last years golden boot winner. The trouble that the Sounders continue to face is that of Victor Bernardez and his physical dominance of the 18 yard box.  Add in some wonderful saves from Jon Busch and it’s resulted in only 6 goals in the last 6 meetings resulting in only 4 points for the Rave Green.

The Sounders have gotten lucky both in Colorado and again in Kansas City. The attack is still going to be missing the potent Obafemi Martins and speedster Steve Zakuani. So what the talent up front to help create goals is going to be missing some punch. Can Mario Martinez be there difference maker? Can Eddie Johnson help give the Sounders another set of 3 points to continue moving up the table.

Personally, I know history and with a full squad that the San Jose Earthquakes keep moving forward with, I just think that while they won’t dominate they will come out ahead.

Prediction:

San Jose Earthquakes – 2 (Wondolowski ’61Gordon ’79) , Seattle Sounders FC – 0
