Clint Dempsey : Paul Frederiksen-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle vs Toronto..err USA vs USA

It’s the match-up executives at MLS headquarters have had circled on their calendars for a months. Jermaine Defoe and Michael Bradley vs Clint Dempsey and the Sounders. Three star players lining up on opposite sides of the pitch leading into the World Cup this summer. If you are not salivating at this match-up… well you are clearly part of the zombieapocolypse. The head coach of the US Men’s National team was did not have kind words for his players who returned to the MLS.

Clint Dempsey could not squeak out a goal last week and Chad Barrett was able to capitalize instead, but Dempsey clearly had the best game of his Sounders career. Although he had only practiced with the team one time leading into First Kick, he showed how valuable he can be, opening up the game, and truly showing the potential partnership  he and Obafemi Martins could have as the year develops.

More importantly this is what you should want, the best versus the best. How big are these stars? In the NBA the USA waltzes through the Olympics, in the NFL, well it is only played in the US. However, Soccer is the most watched, most played, most talked about sport in the world. I know we Americans think we are a big deal, but until just recently, Americans have done everything they can to get out of the United States, and more specifically Major League Soccer, in order to further their careers. That Stops Now. Last fall the soccer world was transfixed by the possibility and “crazy” notion that one of the world’s best and brightest, Clint Dempsey, would want to return to his native land, in his prime and continue his career.

Clint Dempsey doesn’t carry backpacks, he carries nations:

Toronto FC went all out when trying to sign their two-stared tandem of Michael Bradley and Jermaine Defoe, reportedly using super-star Drake to lure Defoe to the maple leaf cause.

Again men who rise to the occasion when their country calls:

How can there be anything bad about this match-up? If you are a league who wants to be considered world class, you need to attract top talent. This is that. Three star players from the US Men’s National Team(USMNT).

Did I say three? How about FIVEYou did’t read that wrong, there are potentially five starters on the USMNT which will take the field in this game. The three I mentioned above, but also Brad Evans and DeAndre Yedlin. Evans who was widely known in the Sounders fan circles for his kind-hearted nature, rocketed to the top of the national team charts after a great showing in the World Cup Qualifying rounds of 2013, including this late game goal which proved crucial for the the USMNT advancing into the 2014 World Cup.

If you are looking for a sport to equate it too, it would be equivalent to the Boston Red Sox taking on the LA Dodgers. Two teams respected within the game who no have perennial all stars playing on their squads.  Fans are getting the November in March.

I have only four words for you

From Seattle, With Love.
