Sounders Gameday: What To Watch For

What to Watch

Can Seattle find a rhythm without Dempsey-

In the two games so far this season,as Dempsey has gone, so has gone the rest of the team. Without two of their national team players in Brad Evans (injury) and Clint Dempsey, will the sounders be able to find a cadence which will lead to success. Marco Pappa will be looking to overcome a disastrous start of 2014 after essentially giving away a goal to Toronto FC in week 2.

The Sounders will have to rely on Obafemi Martins and Kenny Cooper as the primary keys to the game. As we pointed out this week Martins has performed better when he is looked at as the sole striker, his flexibility as a drop back forward is will be fundamental to his and Seattle’s success.

Cooper has done well as the point of the spear and his large stalky build makes him a good target for crosses from Lamar Neagle or Pappa on the wing. With Martins sliding underneath Cooper, look for a lot of activity at the top of opposing box.

Which Stefan Frie will show up

Frie has had a couple of errant approaches to balls flying into the box, and while he is a highly skilled goalie, he was unable to stop Jermaine Defoe’s  two goals in week 2.He has come off of his line on several occasions and been indecisive about how is going to approach a ball.On Sunday he will need to be sure footed, for better or worse, make a decision and stick to it, relying on his insticts, and trusting his defensive line.

With Dempsey and Evans out, it will take a solid team effort to forge the chemistry which was sorely missing in 2013.
