The Seattle Sounders don’t need any more motivation, but Sporting Kansas City owner Robb Heineman lauched a grenade of material to be plastered on every Sounder locker.
Being a sports franchise owner gives you the ability to say a lot of things. Sporting Kansas City owner Robb Heineman took this to the extreme on Saturday after his team announced at halftime of the Seattle Sounders vs. Tottenham Hotspurs friendly the signing of two of its’ biggest stars. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi were introduced as the newest designated player signings for SKC.
Heineman went on to talk about the quality of his team and how good they are,
“I think right now, we’re the greatest in MLS. Frankly, I think there’s no question that we’re the greatest in MLS.” Robb Heineman
The greatest? Really? A team has 35 points through 20 games and plays in the Eastern Conference? Not the team which has 38 points through 18 games and sits atop all of MLS in the standings?
Since a 5-0 loss to the New England Revolution on May 11th the Settle Sounders have gone 4-1-1. The team is scoring an average of 2 goals per game while only allowing .83 goals per game.
SKC for its’ part over the same period have gone 5-3-3 and averaged 1.36 goals per game while giving up 1.09 goals per game. They are winning, but not the “Greatest”.
Sporting has certainly played well, that is not a record to thumb your nose at and points are points however you come by them.
The Seattle Sounders are beginning to look a lot like the 2013 Seattle Seahawks. A well oiled machine with different players stepping up. A team which suffocated opposing offenses. A team which always found a way to play with a chip on their shoulder. Constantly looking for that extra motivation. What Heineman said will be bulletin board material for the rest of the season.
The greatest in MLS? You are not fooling anyone Robb. SKC is still looking up at the Seattle Sounders and it is a mighty fine view from up here.
