Matchday: Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy

The Seattle Sounders FC prepare for a Monday night matchup against the visiting Landon Donovan and the LA Galaxy tonight at 7:00 p.m. PDT (10:00 p.m. EST)

Topping the Western Conference just isn’t enough for the Seattle Sounders. Tonight, the Sounders take on a streaking LA Galaxy, who are playing every game like it’s their last chance to make it to the offseason.

Since starting the season with a lackluster 2-3-3 record, the Galaxy are knocking on the door of the last playoff spot, boasting a 5-1-3 record in the past nine matches.

Much of the credit can be attributed to Robbie Keane exploding as a more aggressive striker, notching 10 goals and 16 helpers, even more than Donovan himself. While the Seattle Sounders hasn’t had many problems when it comes to keeping teams off of the scoresheet, they will for sure see a true test of offense tonight, facing two solid threats up top.

Keane doesn’t just do well against MLS teams, but his statistics against the Sounders are amazing since he joined with the Galaxy back in 2011. In his tenure with LA, he has faced the Sounders seven times, scoring seven goals in that time frame, while LA holds a 5-4-3 record in all time matches against the Seattle Sounders.

On the Sounders side, Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins are a lethal duo, no matter what team or what league they play. They’re deep in each position, like really deep. Should either need to go off, they have Chad Barrett, Tristan Bowen or Kenny Cooper more than willing to occupy that spot, and what more could a team like this ask for? If you’re going to make that run into October, you need a squad that can handle the minutes, and Seattle has that.

Not to mention a strong midfield group with names like Osvaldo Alonso, David Estrada, and Gonzalo Pineda adding a threat at all areas of the pitch.

The same goes for the defense.

Of course, DeAndre Yedlin is a big name. But he is one man, he has three others that he relies on to bail him out if he gets caught. Which is why Seattle also relies on Chad Marshall, Djimi Traore and Leo Gonzalez to hold off any opposing players the Sounders may face. Those will also be the names that Sigi Schmid calls on in a time of need, whether it’s in tonights match or any of their remaining matches this season.

So for tonight, tune in, because it will be a match you’ll regret missing.
