After the completion of the MLS Cup Playoffs Semifinal First Legs, the Seattle Sounders are now listed as favorites to win the MLS Western Conference.

Sport statistics website, PlayoffStatus, currently has the Sounders listed as having a 67% chance of taking the conference title.

Heading into the 2nd Leg’s, the Sounders are the only Western Conference side with an aggregate lead. The Sounders defeated FC Dallas at home, while Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps played out a 0-0 stalemate at Providence Park.

The next most likely conference champion is the Whitecaps at 53%. They have a home fixture against the Timbers and any victory will but them through. However, any score draw or defeat and it’s goodnight.

Despite an excellent home record this season, the Sounders opponents, FC Dallas, find themselves as the current rank outsider with a 33% chance. Unless they prevent the Sounders from scoring, they would require a win by at least two goals to progress. They definitely still have a good chance, but they’ll likely need goals.

Things get even better for the Sounders when looking past the Conference Finals. Sigi Schmid’s men are currently listed as the second most likely side in the whole MLS to reach the MLS Final and win it.

Supporters Shield winners, New York Red Bulls, are currently listed as the most likely MLS Cup winner with a 22% chance at present. However, the Sounders know all too well that the Supporters Shield guarantees you nothing in the playoffs.

The Sounders are considered to have an 18% chance of winning their first MLS Cup this season, just under a 1 in 5 chance. Should they successfully navigate the Conference Semifinal 2nd Leg these chances will greatly increase.

Nobody is counting anything as a given yet. However, there is a sense around Seattle that the playoff doom could be lifting. Hopefully a well rested squad and a few key players returning from injury will see them through to the Conference Final.
