Match Preview: Seattle Hosts NYCFC

NYCFC head to the west coast to take on the Sounders for the first time this season.

For the first time in franchise history, NYCFC will travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders for the first and only time in the 2016 MLS regular season. NYCFC is coming off a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Union and is in third place in the east, one point off second place Red Bulls and five points off first place Philadelphia. That win against Philadelphia was the first win they had in the past 5 MLS games, losing to RSL and the Red Bulls and tying Toronto and Orlando City.

The last time these two teams met was on May 3rd during the 2015. The Sounders picked up all three points on the road thanks to a 3-1 win with two goals from Martins and one Dempsey.  NYCFC had the majority of the possession 54%-46% in favor of NYCFC and also lead the game in shots (20 to Seattle’s 11) and shots on target (9 to Seattle’s 7).

NYCFC is going to be a tricky team to beat this time around, though. Even though they have been spotty as of late, they are always a goal scoring threat, only being held to a shutout once in their last 7 MLS games. NYCFC’s goals frequently come from David Villa, who currently leads the MLS Golden Boot race with 11 goals so far this season. To win this game, the Sounders will have to keep that man and the rest of the NYCFC front-line quiet.

The Sounders will also be celebrating their second annual Pride Day Saturday as they celebrate the LGBTQ community in the Seattle area. There will be pregame festivities as well as ceremonies before kick-off. Kickoff for this game will be at 2pm and it will be televised on ESPN.
