Sounders travel to Sandy, Utah to take on Real Salt Lake in the US Open Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday night.
Let’s face it, the Seattle Sounders are having a disaster of a season. Currently in 9th place in the west and 17th overall in the Supporter Shield standings, this is definitely a season to forget. One way for the Sounders to ease the pain that the supporters feel right now is to make a deep run in the US Open Cup. A deep run could build confidence in any struggling team and as we all know Seattle could use all the confidence they can get. On Tuesday night they have the opportunity to do just that.
After coming off a 2-0 win over the Kitsap Pumas, the Sounders advanced to the Round of 16 and are now on their way down to Rio Tinto Stadium to challenge Real Salt Lake for a spot in the US Open Cup quarter-finals. Real Salt Lake came back from 2-0 down against the USL’s Wilmington Hammerheads to win 3-1 on penalties.
With Andy Craven and Darwin Jones playing a full 90 minutes for S2 Sunday night, it is very unlikely that we will see them down in Sandy, Utah. But, even though they were on the bench, Tony Alfaro and Zach Mathers didn’t get any playing time against Swope Park Rangers so we could see them getting some minutes for the first team as they did against the Kitsap Pumas.
Kickoff on Tuesday night will be at 7pm. The game will be streamed on YouTube and the winner of this game will play the winner of the Timbers-Galaxy match, played on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
