One, rather quick and crazy rosterbation thought. If you don’t like it kick it back up. I’m not trying to start a rumor, merely trying to put pieces together. We know that West Ham is preparing to make a decision in regards to Osvaldo Alonso rather soon. Either they’re just going to let him return back stateside or they may make an offer in an attempt retain his services in a permanent manner. News out of Newham at the moment is that they
are making made a move for South Afircan Leaguer Andile Jali. Now this may or may not rule them out for Alonso.
Should, and I don’t really think he will, but should Alonso take off for overseas there is a real lack of depth for a defensive midfielder. I suppose Andy Rose could do the job and one has to think they’ve obviously kept Servando Carrasco around for more than just his wife. Maybe?
But one has to think, considering the circumstances and the Sounders talk of upgrading the backline, they are just as likely to get decent third centreback through the Superdraft in Janurary or even through a trade within MLS. Going after someone such as the rumours surrounding Christoph Metzelder leaves bigger questions to the mind that there maybe something bigger than just grabbing a player on the downside of his career on the horizon. Or maybe not.
I will randomly throw this out there and submit to you, could they be preparing themselves for losing Alonso? Everyone keeps talking about Metzelder as a centreback but the funny thing about him, is that he’s also played the role of a defensive midfielder and done so moderately well at a higher level than MLS.
I’m kind of familar with Metzelder… well.. sort of. He was one of my favourite guys to acquire in FIFA12 to play fill in the gap of center defensive midfield after selling off Osvaldo Alonso. HHHhhhmm…could life be mimicking art, err, video games?
Seriously though… a few things to consider is that Metzelder still has some value to him according to the Transfer Market site and in generally he is someone with a lot of experience that could be valued by other clubs that could obviously pay a bit for him. More than the average MLS’er makes that is.
Again, just kind of seeing where pieces fit. I’m not saying the Sounders are going to bring in Metzelder because they’re selling off Alonso, he’d be an excellent defensive piece to have on the back line and it’s unlikely that he could put together a season of more than 2,000 minutes considering this age. If they were to get him as a guy that could come in instill a presence a long the backline that would be excellent.
But considering some of the question marks floating around in the air, it’s only natural to conduct a bit of random speculation. It’s also the fun part of all this. Knowing all the details can be rather boring, but completely making things up. Now, that’s fun!
