Question of the Day: DP’s, How Do You Think Teams Should Spend Money?

I actually am working towards a bigger piece here, so I don’t want to steal too much of my own thunder or material. But I still want to get some feedback.

The question of the day is how should Major League Soccer teams spend their money on Designated Players?

It’s basically a free ticket to spend as much money as you want on three players. We’ve the league itself spend it on a wide variety of players. From Defenders such as Rafa Marquez to stars on the  back end of their careers such as David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Freddie Ljundberg, Thierry Henry, Juan Pablo Ángel and even Torsten Frings.

Then you also have the inverse of such. Teams going after younger unproven players such as Jerry Bengston, Fredy Montero, Alvaro Fernandez, Fabian Castillo and Raphael Augusto. They’ve also chosen to locked down domestic stars Landon Donovan, Shalrie Joseph and Freddy Adu.

Just curious, if there a specific manner in which fans would like to the team sign Designated Players. And a sub question to that should teams build their team around their designated players or use designated players to augment the holes on a team?

Would love some feedback today on Presidents Day!

I think the league has to seriously look at raising the cap significantly over the next five years. MLS is at a point where it has a good solid financial foundation and needs to take the next step. How do you do that? With stars. Stars are needed to drive the TV ratings which in turn generate larger contracts and more money for the league. Yes, a majority of teams have good fans bases but how do you spread that, you have to get the ratings up. The only way to bring the big stars in, is to pay them more, which is not applicable if you have a low ceiling. You mentioned Donovan, but he chose to stay in the US, he could have gone elsewhere and made more money. Beckham, didn’t need the money as he has lots of sponsorship deals on the side and just took a max contract, which was low for him. The only way to raise the leagues visibility therefore is to raise the salary cap for the DP’s.
