Sounders Opening Day: What to watch for

The Seattle Sounders kick off the 2013 season today and there are several things to watch for.

The Return of Steve Zakuani:

After a devastating leg injury suffered in 2011, the midfielder will start the 2013 season in full form with an entire offseason of training under his belt. He will be looked upon to be an attacking midfielder and should be expected to score 10+ goals and 10+ assists.

Which Mario Martinez will we see?

The 2012 mid-season midfielder will more than likely be the immediate replacement of Fredy Montero. He had a strong finish in the 2012 playoffs and showed his true potential in World Cup qualifying play against the USA with the Honduran national team. He has a nose for the goal and look for him to take some shots from distance. However, he can disappear from a game as he did several times late in the regular season last year.

How will the defense look?

To start the season the Sounders will be without all-star Osvaldo Alonso in the defensive midfield due to his double yellow cards in Seattle’s final game last year. The team will also be without defensive back Marc Burch who is serving a 3 suspension carrying over from last season as well.

Here is how we see the lineup for tonight’s match.

March to the match starts at 6:30 pm in Occidental Park.
