USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo is expected to be re-instated with the US Women’s Team following her 30 day suspension over, per ESPN.com.
More from Sounders Nation
Solo was suspended when the US Soccer Federation learned she had allowed her husband, Jerramy Stevens, to utilize the women’s team bus while driving under the influence of alcohol in Manhattan Beach, while the USWNT was undergoing a training cap. Solo was a passenger, and per reports also intoxicated and belligerent with the officers when her husband was placed under arrest.
ESPN stated that Solo met all the requirements the Federation set out for her under her suspension, but that the ultimate decision lies with USWNT coach Jill Ellis and other representatives of USA Soccer. US Soccer President Sunil Gulati has said in the past that Hope Solo could very well miss the Women’s World Cup this summer. Solo has to meet with her coaches and other US Soccer representatives in the coming days to determine the next course of action.
If she is cleared to return to the team, Hope Solo could rejoin the team ahead of the Algarve Cup, a tournament often used to get team chemistry and cohesion together ahead of the World Cup in June. The USWNT play their first match March 4th against Norway, currently ranked 12th in the world by the FIFA rankings. The US Women then play Switzerland and Iceland in the remainder of the group stage, who are ranked 19 and 20 respectively).
During Hope Solo’s suspension, Ashlyn Harris started the last 2 USWNT matches, a 2-0 loss to France and a 1-0 win over the England ladies. There are those who feel it would be better for the team overall to move on from Hope Solo, and embrace Ashlyn Harris as the new starter. Solo has been brilliant for the USWNT over her career, but in the past few months her brushes with the law have left a black mark on both the US Women’s Team and women’s soccer in general. Ashlyn Harris currently plays for the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, who finished 4th in the league last season.
When it comes to her club, the NWSL Champion Seattle Reign, Hope Solo’s status has remained unchanged. Seattle did not feel any further punishment was necessary for their star goalkeeper.
Hope Solo won the Golden Gloves for the 2011 Women’s World Cup, where the USWNT lost to the Japanese team in the final.
