Per USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann, Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore has been taken off the Gold Cup squad due to a lack of match fitness. According to an interview on the US Soccer website, the USA coaches didn’t think Altidore was quite up to scratch yet.

“We believe that Jozy’s just not there yet. Jozy never really got into this tournament and never really picked up the rhythm. He’s just simply not in the shape right now to help us”- USMNT Manager Jurgen Klinsmann

LA Galaxy forward Alan Gordon was brought into the fold to replace Altidore for the reaminder of the Gold Cup. Altidore did not have a good group stage, and so chances were he wasn’t going to remain a key player in this tournament, but a removal from the squad was a bit of a surprise to most fans.

Personally, I’m a fan of Jozy Altidore, and I’m hoping he can go back to Toronto, get in shape,  and start scoring some more goals for club and country.

Aside from Jozy Altidore being replaced, 2 other players were taken off the team’s roster and replaced with others; Greg Garza and Alfredo Morales were also taken off the team and replaced by DaMarcus Beasley and Joe Corona respectively. All three players were on the standby roster prior to the tournament, for just this reason.

Speaking on the other switches, Klinsann mentioned that, despite being sent home, Greg Garza would be back into the USMNT fold in the future. Garza was recently sent on loan to LigaMX side Atlas for the upcoming season. His former teammate Joe Corona was brought up thanks to his experience at CONCACAF levels.

“[Joe] knows CONCACAF inside out. Joe Corona is very experienced in playing against the teams from the Caribbean and Central America. He’s a player that can also help us, here and there, to hold the ball better, to take care of the ball.” Klinsmann on Joe Corona

If the USMNT are to make a deep run towards the CONCACAF Gold Cup title, all the players selected must be ready and willing to contribute as best they can. With this squad, Jurgen Klinsmann believes he has a crew capable of winning the Gold Cup once again!
