Obafemi Martins Won’t Be Leaving For Bournemouth

As Obafemi Martins had an MVP caliber season last year and has followed it up with an excellent 2015 campaign so far, there should be no surprise that the Sounders forward has been connected with various transfer rumors. With 6 goals through 7 games this season, and 15 in 19 back to last season, the big man is surely seen as a hot commodity.

The latest team that are linked with making an offer on the Nigerian born forward include recently promoted English side AFC Bournemouth, who will begin playing in the Premier League next season following a successful campaign that earned them promotion from the Football League Championship. Given his successful stints in Europe before, including a successful spell at Premier League side Newcastle United from 2006-2009, there are surely many teams that would like to acquire his services. Bournemouth were a bit overly reliant on Callum Wilson to score goals this season, and so the Bournemouth brass are rumored to be in on getting some ObaGoals for the Cherries.

While the report is a bit dicey at best, given the source material, it would not be surprising if teams really are interested in Martins given his record of success. However, the forward is by all accounts happy in Seattle, and after being given a contract extension last season that allegedly saw his pay doubled it’s unlikely the Sounders would force him out the door. Bournemouth is an unlikely destination for Obafemi Martins for a few other reasons as well, given that Bournemouth have built their team soundly without splashing excessive cash (much like Premier League regulars Swansea City) and spending big money on a 30 year old striker who is years removed from the grind of playing in England’s top flight might be a bit of a stretch for them.

It would take either a massive transfer fee the Sounders could not refuse, a sudden and dramatic worsening of the relationship between the Sounders front office or teammates and Martins, or some odd combination of both for the Rave Green to not have Obafemi Martins leading the line and banging in ObaGoals at CenturyLink.

So, no need to worry Sounders fans. We will continue to see goals like this for 2015 and beyond!
